Love Lynn Butler

Friday, February 5th, 2010

JulietMore great stuff from an old issue of Elle Decor! Lynn Butler Beling is a former senior style editor at Martha Stewart Weddings. She is now a freelance editorial consultant and stylist to many popular magazines. Her work is clean, fresh and inviting.

Lynn also has a delightful line of men’s ties. I love the florals! My guy wouldn’t do it, but if we were the preppy beach type, I might have to insist!

You now know, if you didn’t already, that Lynn has terrific style, which always begs the question, “Where do you shop?” While I don’t have the full inside scoop, I do know that we can shop Lynne’s style at The Product Gallery — an online store with products hand-picked by Lynn Butler from around the world.

New York International Gift Fair

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

{ new product from Dwell Studio from NYIGF Twitter }

The International Gift Fair is currently taking place this week in New York, January 30 – February 4. I’m excited to find out in the coming weeks and months what new product is being debuted at the show. Our new Ink & Paper spring products are being represented through our sales rep in the New York area who has a booth with many stationery vendors…wish we could be there!

The fabric and pillow shown to the left are from one of my all time favs – DwellStudio. They never cease to amaze me with their color choice, pattern, and all around great design sense. I almost registered for baby stuff at Target solely because of their products!

Above is product from Jonathan Adler courtesy of the blog Margeaux. I love what I can see of the bright colored pillows and fun new ceramics.

And I don’t know who the company shown above left are – any ideas? The pillows are whimsical and funny. I’d love to add one to our living room for a good conversation piece. And who isn’t interested in new Amy Butler textiles? Now we just wait for product to hit the stores and web…

Simply Christmas

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

un_jbLast month I was presented with a terrific opportunity to design and implement a “Simply Christmas” decor for my church. It’s a brand new building with huge windows, loads of natural light, beautiful stone details, and lots of modern amenities. There happen to be a lot of really creative people who attend Hope — musicians, artists, photograpers, designers, etc. — so it was a huge honor to be asked and to get to work with a really talented group of people to pull this off before Thanksgiving.

The theme, as I mentioned, is Simply Christmas. The creative direction was this beautiful graphic by Robb Major that will be our seasonal brand for sermons and events throughout December. Can you see that the snowflake is actually made up of lots of little snowflakes and that CHRISTMAS is a fresh, leafy green color?

SimplyChristmasWell, my co-decorator, Jill, and I enthusiastically tore pages from our favorite magazines and catalogs, pulled fabric swatches from our workrooms, and exchanged countless text messages that can be summed up by a few keywords: mercury glass, fresh greens, linen and burlap, white lights, simple snowflakes.

As you might expect, our budget was somewhat limited. Since we were essentially starting from scratch, we opted to spend our money on timeless pieces that could be used throughout the year (i.e. mercury glass sconces) and from year to year (lighted artificial trees). We spent a little money on some live plants (wreaths, paperwhites and pointsettias) to add depth and texture in the places where people pass by frequently.

Jill found a dozen cableknit scarves on clearance at Old Navy that we cut apart and stitched back together around the base of the pointsettias instead of the flashy foil they usually come in. In fact, when we placed the pointsettia order, we requested they come without wrapping at all, which saved a buck or two on each one! We set each one in a plastic bag from the supply closet to protect the floor from leaks, and then wrapped them in the scarves.

I found four-for-$1 packs of snowflake ornaments for our trees at Target and picked up a bunch of canvas drop cloths for a steal at the hardware store.

With a few additional flourishes — fresh holly from my backyard, pewter nativity scene ornaments from Ben Franklin, and some recycled Anthropologie gift ties (see paperwhites above) – the whole thing came together beautifully.

It really was a fun project and a good exercise in decorating restraint.

I hope to have my own house decorated next week!

SUSTAIN, Inc. {Charlottesville, VA}

Monday, November 30th, 2009

un_jbI’m not a big Black Friday/Cyber Monday shopper, but since shopping is on everyone’s mind right now, I thought I would share this great Charlottesville shop with you. Rachel and I got out of town for a quick getaway before Thanksgiving. Charlottesville is a quick one-hour drive from Richmond and the shopping is terrific. Since we make this trip a few times a year, we have a list of favorites we like to hit. But we discovered a couple of new gems this time around.

SUSTAIN, Inc. is a beautiful store featuring environmentally friendly products — from clothing and accessories to furniture and wallpaper.

The first floor is set up in colorful vignettes that inspire all sorts of creativity. By the time I reached the second story rooftop patio, I decided I could move right in and call it home. Everything is artfully curated and has an interesting eco-story — recycled fibers, natural dyes, reclaimed hardware and inventive details are abound.

This loft-style second floor bedroom reminded me how much I’d love to have a platform bed someday. The soothing monochromatic scheme combined with natural fibers, metallic details and loads of sunlight make for a fresh and sophisticated bedroom that I would be happy to wake up in.

I would also be very happy to have a dinner date with this gorgeous clutch. I can’t tell you how badly I wanted it to be within my withering budget.

SUSTAIN, Inc. is run by two lovely women, Lauren Gerner and Erin Bevacqua, who were busy unpacking even more terrific treasures while we shopped. If you are traveling through Charlottesville, or live locally and haven’t made it there yet, make your way to SUSTAIN!

SUSTAIN, Inc. is located in the Main Street Market at 406 West Main Street, Charlottesville VA 22903.

By the way, that incredible turquoise beaded chandelier on their Website is actually hanging in the store.  It’s breathtaking…

We’re With the Band

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

tog_fin4_squn_jbIt’s true. We are with the band. And you’ve probably picked up on our rockstar theme this week and are perhaps wondering what it’s all about. Well, I couldn’t be more proud to share with you what’s going on. My husband, Mark, is part of a band called Louisiana Territory. Mark, Tyler and Matt (left to right in photo, below) have been playing together for just over two years and are releasing their first full-length professionally produced, mixed and mastered album this Friday.

tog_photo

This creative collaboration is comprised of some amazing artists, from the music to the marketing. This photo is one of a ton taken by acclaimed photographer, Casey Templeton. Not only is Casey an incredible photographer, but he’s also one of the kindest, most genuine people we know. I highly suggest spending some time exploring his commercial and wedding portfolios.

tog_posterI’m ever so slightly biased when it comes to band art, but I have to show you a few of Louisiana Territory’s gig posters, designed by the band’s own Matt Klimas, whose portfolio is also really fun to browse. His fresh and quirky aesthetic combined with always perfect color palettes literally have me stockpiling his work to someday have hanging in our house.

As for the music — it rocks! You can hear the whole album streaming this week only, pick up a copy at the show, or purchase one online beginning Friday!

I know these songs backward and forward, I love these guys dearly and I can’t wait to toast their accomplishments Friday night at their CD release party.

By the way, the event is open to the public. Please join us! The more the merrier…

Altered Book Art

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

un_jbEvery year, my church hosts a week-long Summer Art Camp where kids and adults can explore various creative arts. This year, I’m a volunteer for the 4th and 5th graders who are learning how to create altered book art.

Altered book art is simply the process of modifying books (preferably old or damaged books headed for the trash) to create three dimensional pieces of art. I had no idea this was such a vast art form. There is actually an International Society of Altered Book Artists and tons of exhibits all over the world!

Since I didn’t know anything about it and I’m having so much fun watching these children learn to do it, I thought you might be interested, too.

photo_072209_soa

{images: all but the top right image are sample pieces created by the art instructor; the top right image is one of the students’ work in progress}

Our students are using all sorts of recycled materials to embellish their books, creating very personal and unique sculptures. At the same time, they are learning basic art principles and techniques like understanding a color wheel and painting with water colors.

I am specifically intrigued by the process of cutting and folding pages of text to create interesting textures, stories and landscapes. Take a look at some of these artists’ work:

I specifically selected the pieces above because you can easily see that they are created from books; however, you must take a look at the hyperlinked portfolios to see just how extraordinary some of these books become in the hands of a talented artist.

What an incredible art form. I’m so grateful to be learning so much about it this week! I hope you enjoy it, too.

Going to the Chapel (or at least shopping!)

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

As promised, here are some treasures I dug up online in celebration of wedded bliss. Shopping is blissful, too!

For the bride: Winifred Grace’s jewelry is incredible. I had a chance to meet the designer at a trunk show in Richmond last winter. She’s a delightful spirit, and obviously, a super-talented designer! I love the idea of this edgy, sophisticated jewelry on a bride.

Also slightly unconventional, how gorgeous are these garters? You really should click through to see all of Piper Ewan’s color combinations and other handmade treasures.

For the ceremony: These sweet ceramic ring dishes by Love Grows by Giving are the perfect modern take on the classic satin ring pillow.

For the couple: a few ideas for personal, unexpected wedding presents. Rae Dunn’s cake plate would be such a sweet thing to pull out on anniversaries, year after year. And the perfect reason to indulge in a slice of cake, though I don’t usually need a reason!

If you tend to stick to registries, consider combining a set of these custom napkin rings with table linens from the couple’s registry.

This handmade, organic wool pillow and coordinating blanket by Lorcom Lane Design are so luxurious in wedding white. What a nice way to feather the new nest.

For the girls: I have always liked the idea of an ornament to commemorate a relationship, a special event or a family tradition. I adore these feminine birds with their festive ribbon plumes by Pamela Angus.

A ring holder is something you never think about buying for yourself, yet everyone needs one! And that makes it the perfect gift, especially considering all the talk about rings when it comes to a wedding! These are from Red Envelope and there are others to choose from online.

{All photos credited to designers as identified in each collage.}

Here’s to a good find…cheers!

Pillow Talk

Thursday, June 4th, 2009

Speaking of bedrooms this week, I got out of mine a little late today and it’s been slow-going ever since. But while we’re on the topic, I thought I’d share a few of our favorite bedrooms from our various travels. It’s such a luxury to stay in gorgeous, comfortable accommodations, and these are no exception:

The Hope and Glory Inn in Irvington, VA is an old schoolhouse turned B&B. Everything about this place is special – from the footed tub in the garden to breakfast at the farm table. This is the perfect place for a romantic getaway, girls’ weekend, wedding or reunion.

I can actually hear the water lapping on the shore when I look at photos of Hotel Saint Barth Isle de France in the French West Indes. These bedrooms are all about serenity.

Healdsburg, CA is a lovely village in Sonoma, about an hour north of San Francisco. It’s the perfect place to stay when touring wine country. Duchamp has six luxurious villas surrounding the pool and garden, offering the perfect respite after a long day of sipping wines and nibbling cheeses.

I have family living in Gyovik, Norway and we fly into Oslo when visiting. Though we’ve never stayed overnight in Oslo, we do plan to make it part of our itinerary one of these days. I think I’ll lobby for a night or two at the Hotel Grims Grenka. You can see more photos here. The rooms are color-schemed based on seasonal themes – summer rooms are done in shades of green and face the atrium; winter rooms are frosty white and icy blue, looking out on to a quiet street.

And of course New York City boasts of many sophisticated, high-style hotels, but the Bryant Park Hotel, with all the allure of Fashion Week, is top notch.
