NYIGF 2010

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

The New York International Gift Fair took place this week, August 13th–today, at the Javits Center in New York. While I was not in attendance, I have been loving seeing photos around the web of product showcased at the event. These are some of my favorites:

Laurel Denise is a jewelry designer now based in Charlottesville, VA. I first came across her work at a trade show a few years ago and love her delicate, detailed pieces. Her signature designs include her own handwriting and illustrations on glass. Visit her web site to see more.

Smock is an eco-friendly print shop with beautiful designs printed on bamboo paper. Those sheets of hanging wrap make me want one of each! And below are new designs from another favorite, 9 Spot Monk, I love these new note card boxes with the circle die-cut window. So sweet!

And lastly, check out new product from Dwell Studio. The debuted their fabric collection that was created in collaboration with Robert Allen, along with new rugs, pillows, wallpaper, and baby items. I cant wait to see the new textiles in person and figure out what I might need for my home!

Get Away to Irvington, VA

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

As usual, I took an excessive number of photographs this weekend in Irvington, VA, thus I’ve spent the better part of the day organizing and editing! Hopefully you’ll enjoy a little photo tour of our stay at The Hope & Glory. It was a truly delightful weekend — a perfect getaway for the girls or to escape with your guy or girl. Hope & Glory PatioWe rode bikes all around town and stopped mid-day for a dip in the pool tucked away in a vineyard nearby.

Amenities at The Hope & GloryWe lounged around in any number of delightfully cozy corners at the Inn.

Hope & Glory DetailsWe took a sunset cruise on the bay, complete with cocktails, munchies and the perfect breeze.

Faded Glory Sunset CruiseWe read countless magazines, chatted into the night and might have checked e-mail once or twice…

Sitting Room at The Hope & GloryAnd we spent a wee bit of time in, er, detention. The main inn is a restored schoolhouse to which owners Dudley and Peggy Patteson recently added a full bar open to guests any time of day. The walls are painted chalkboards adorned with clever indications of a weekend well-spent. And the lovely zinc tables and chairs make a classy spot for a little penance — including composition books where guests are encouraged to note the more savory details of their stay. Hilarious to read, as you might imagine!

Detention at The Hope & GloryOur visit to this charming little water town on the Northern Neck could not have been better thanks to the gracious hospitality and  delightful company at The Hope & Glory Inn.

A weekend away with my girlfriends looked like this in the mornings … Including a refreshing breeze and Frank Sinatra surrounding us in the courtyard.

Since I’m still here with a cup of coffee and the best cranberry muffin ever, I’ll share more details another time.

For now, you can check out the our delightful B&B online at hopeandglory.com in Irvington, VA.

Best Nest

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

I mentioned last week that I was headed to the Eastern Shore for a few days with 8 women in my family (+ baby James!). We had a wonderful, relaxing time in Cape Charles, VA – mostly sunning on the beach and eating lots of good food. I had never been to this quaint, shore town before and loved the sleepy, laidback feel. One afternoon we strolled through town where I discovered a true treasure: Best Nest Interiors.

Owners John and Nikki have many years of experience in the home furnishings and interior decorating business and are best known for creating beautiful beach chic spaces. The store was packed full of colorful textiles, decorative accessories and interesting pieces of furniture. Made me wish I had a beach cottage to fill up with these items.

If you are ever in Cape Charles this store is a must-see! And while you’re there…stop by the Cape Charles Coffee House a couple of blocks down for your morning cup of joe…my second favorite place in this sleepy town.

Head in the Ground

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

I think I’ve mentioned along the way that my professional background is in marketing and communications. Right now I do some consulting for a great company based out of Richmond called Floricane. Last night I had the delightful pleasure of attending a focus group that Floricane was facilitating at our local botanical garden.  I was reminded of what an exceptional neighborhood destination Lewis Ginter is!

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden{Flowers in Bloom — July}

I’ve been to one party, a couple of meetings and a handful of outdoor concerts at the Garden, but I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never actually toured the property.

My real point in sharing this with you is to suggest you seek out a botanical garden in your area. I guarantee it will be an amazing source of creative inspiration for your garden, your home, your art or your children.

As this article published in the New York Times yesterday says, botanical gardens are no longer exclusive to garden-club ladies, horticultural lectures and chrysanthemum contests. They include hip concert series, children’s gardens, and composting classes. Ours (and others) even have shopping, dining and dogs!

I’d say it’s time to pull my head out of the ground and see what’s blooming around me. I think I’ll start with a Fidos After Five tour of the garden next month.

Coastal Love

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

I’m heading out of town in a couple of days for a long weekend on the Eastern Shore. There are 8 women in my family going to celebrate my mom and cousin both turning 60 this year. (hope you don’t mind me revealing that, mom!) It’s going to be a great weekend, so I’ve been dreaming about our little coastal get-away and would love to be packing all of my travel gear in any of these pieces from Halsea.

I’ve been an admirer of Halsea for quite some time and love their sophisticated, casual beach style. Visit their web site to view the complete product line and for information on where you can purchase.

Modish Quirk GivewayHop over to Modish to enter before May 19. And while you’re there, be sure to get to know Miss Modish a bit. Her blog is a lovely compilation of art, design and entrepreneurship. A little fashion, a little decor, a little glimpse into a sweet life in Portland, OR.

Learning from the Pros

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

An invitation to Williams & Sherrill after hours, a glass of wine and tasty hors d’oeuvres? I’m yours.

Rachel and I had the pleasure of attending an IFDA (International Furnishings & Design Association) reception at one of our favorite places in Richmond — full of amazing furniture, lighting, accessories and textiles. Not to mention a very sophisticated crowd of designers to mingle with! It was such a treat!

Thank you, Kevin, for the invitation! And to everyone for so graciously welcoming us!

Williams & Sherrill {retail}
Not only did we get to putter around the store like we like to do, but the owner gave an informal presentation about the season’s hottest trends and what we can expect to see from the design community this year!
Of course we jotted down a few notes to share, so you can be sure we’ll be revisiting all of these concepts and more on Urban Nest in the coming weeks.
For now: two main design directions, 1) Industrial Chic and 2) Mid-century; lots of neutral colors and natural fibers; and even some menswear details.

April R.Home House Tour {Powhatan, VA}

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

I’m an avid reader of Richmond magazine, especially it’s bimonthly R.Home issues. In each one, the editor features a Richmond-area home and tour open to the public. I finally made it to one of the tours this weekend and it was fabulous!

This is an extraordinary new home on several acres of property along the James River. While the exterior of the home is quite stately, the interior was full of delightful details that suggest easy living.

I took a boatload of snapshots, some of which I’ll share, but most of which do not compare to the professional photographs taken by Kip Dawkins for R.Home.

Beyond the obvious wow factor of this gorgeous home and the amazing collection of artwork, what really strikes my fancy are the clever, witty and breezy effects the owners’ taste projects.

Below is the master suite, an eclectic mix of casual and elegant, soft colors and loads of sunlight.

R.Home House Tour, Powhatan VA (April 2010)The 20′ ceilings and walls full of windows throughout the main floor invite the natural surroundings in — huge trees, fresh breezes and rolling waters.

I love the effortless look of layered rugs and stacked canvases in the foyer.

R.Home House Tour, Powhatan VA (April 2010)Below (clockwise), the kitchen, the powder room, his office and her studio. Would it surprise you to know that he is a developer and she is a designer?

R.Home House Tour, Powhatan VA (April 2010)Again, the pool, the patio and the view speak for themselves…but I have to point out the vintage bottle drying rack in the garden.

R.Home House Tour, Powhatan VA (April 2010)

I’ve seen these at antique shops and salvage yards without much interest. I’m now obsessed with having one.

Another nod to the authenticity of the homeowners’ lifestyle — these wine bottles were not scrubbed clean nor labels scraped free, but simply turned upside down in all their glory at the end of the night for the rain to weather and wash. Clearly an interesting garden sculpture, I’m not sure it isn’t also a beautiful rain chime…

That’s it from my camera, but definitely click over to R.Home for more about the homeowners and their lovely home.
